The clock is two-minutes to nine. The time allotted for the test is almost complete. The sweat on the brow drops onto the test paper and mixes with the graphite of the pencil and thoughts of failure begin to emerge. I have five questions left and not enough time. I need more time. The buzzer goes off and pencils down. Will I make this promotion? Will I have the victory or will I have to repeat this test again?
I have just been tested. As I carry myself outside the testing room, I am overcome with the sense of another test. This test is so much more difficult and yet a test for which I cannot escape. This test comes with promotion and a study guide as well. This test is for all mankind. No one escapes this test.
Jesus was tested. When taken by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness and fasting 40 days and 40 nights, as to be expected, he was hungry. Satan comes to test his loyalty to the Father and demands that he turn stones into bread. Jesus spoke the words recorded in Matthew 4:4 “It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” Similar words given in Deuteronomy 8:3 “that man doth not live by bread only, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the Lord doth man live.” This was a test.
The people of Israel where starved by God (Deut. 8). He was testing them. He was proving whether or not they would stay the course. Our tests are different. Our challenges are different, but they are all used for the same purpose. Whose voice will we listen to? Will we listen to the familiar spirit? Will we listen to the ungodly friend trying to get us to sin against God? Will we listen to the person with good intentions, but ungodly advice? Will we be promoted into the kingdom of God?
