Do Christians, Muslims and Jews worship the same God?

christianity, muslims, buddhist

I came across an opinion piece on CNN written by Jeffrey Weiss who decided to tackle the question: Do Christians, Muslims and Jews worship the same God? For whatever reason he decided to use over 1500 words to do this, but I will answer it in less than 270.

What is the most inclusive response from scholars?

“So do Christians, Muslims and Jews worship the same God?”

“In two major volumes on the subject recently published by scholars from various faiths and traditions, including Volf’s, the most inclusive response from these scholars is basically: Yes, and it’s our God.”

What was his conclusion?

“So do all three faiths actually worship the same deity, whether they call him God or Allah or Adonai?”

“God only knows.”

What is my conclusion?

I will include all religions and not just the three mentioned above. The God served by Christians died for their entrance into heaven. Christians get into heaven through the door, Jesus, by grace because of what Jesus did.

No other religion has an advocate that died for their salvation that they may now rest, like Christians, from their own works.

Here you see clearly two different foundations: A religion who’s God literally dies to save his people and all others who cannot claim this.

P.S. The man beside Jesus on the cross, asked the Lord to remember him and he went to paradise that same day. He did not commit lengthy works; he just died and was immediately saved by grace. What an awesome God Christian’s worship.

  1. Love your succinct answer to this question.

One thing that makes me want to rethink my own WordPress blog is the ad below this article that I got (and I know you have no control over it) was for Christian swingers. (Love the Lord and group sex? This is the dating site for you!) Disgusting! Makes me afraid to see what ads they have on my blog. I wanted you to know in case you (like me, usually) use a browser with an ad blocker and don’t see this ad on your blog.

  2. YES… the Christians, the Muslims and Jews do worship the same ‘god’.
He is ALSO the same ‘god’ that the people of all the other ‘religions’ ( including the atheists) also worship.

I know who he is….Do you know who he is?

A person’s true belief , true god, is seen in the way that one lives his life…every day.

What do ALL people of all “religions” desire, defend, fight for, and glorify?
    …..the GOD OF FREEDOM
…… be free to do one’s own will… be free to do one’s own rights, one’s own religion, one’s own lifestyle, one’s own happiness

This FREEDOM dictates that it is right to be free to serve and magnify ‘oneself’ (the XES)
…this god declares that each has the equal right to establish for oneself what is right.

This is the image that ALL glorify…this is the ‘god of fortresses’.

This is the ‘LIGHT’ that President Obama has declared and confessed in Jerusalem to be the will of his ‘god’….the ‘god’ that he said is common to the 3 main “religions”.
…and this is the “mark” that all embrace on their foreheads or on their hands.

BUT….NOTE…THAT THIS ‘FREEDOM’ god ALSO dictates that it is RIGHT to be free to worship ANY god…blasphemously denying the pre-eminence of the One Creator who gave and gives existence…whose identity is defined by His Son Jesus Christ.

Christ said that one is to worship Only the One Creator Father and His Will Alone to serve.
…and this One God said that man will not worship any other ‘god’ for there is none other.

Soon, Christ, the Son of the One Creator, will return to RULE the earth and man according Only to the Will of the Yahweh Elohim and not according to the “freedom god” that man serves as his first love.

    • I would agree with your statement if you placed false before Christians. There are only two kingdoms in this world. The kingdom of light and darkness. Jesus said, he was the way, the truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father, but by him. One door. One way. Any other way is false, no matter what title you claim, but true worshippers who worship God in Spirit and in Truth will be saved.

Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’ – Matthew 7:22-23

      It is a sobering thought.

  3. I just read your blog post and was unsure of what you were saying. Do you believe that the God of the Jews is different from the God we worship as Christians?

  4. Yes, I worship Myself.

    • Better to be cold (Revelation 3:15-16) then lukewarm, as this puts you in a better position for salvation. Most people worship themselves and say they don’t.

You understand the clear lines of worshipping self, rather than God. The only problem is you cannot save yourself from death. Better to worship someone more powerful than yourself.

  5. Yes, we absolutely all worship the same God. The reason it seems as though we do not is because each faith tradition expresses who that God is in different ways. However, underlying those particular expressions are the exact same Truths. The best way to see this is by looking at the works of those who were particularly enlightened and graced by knowledge through God. In the Christian context, the best person to study is Master Eckhart. At the same time, it is important to follow a religion and reach the ultimate source but a deeper understanding of all religions will show that all are ultimately (and at their highest level beyond particular expression) the same. I would recommend reading the work of Perennial philosophers. The foremost Christian among them would be James Custinger.

    • Where your argument fails is at the root. You mistakenly bypass the root and grab the branches. My foundation determines my destination as a building. We may have some wood, metal, and other elements the same, but we are going to look and be something entirely different. Don’t gloss over the foundation. My foundation is Jesus Christ who came in the flesh to die for me, no other religion has this foundation and so my destination will be different.

      • Forgive me but I don’t enjoy getting into debates – although I do love discussions!! I’m actually talking about foundations and not roots. Our underlying understanding (root) is the same but expressed differently (branch). Every religion agrees that God manifests Himself in the world so that through that manifestation Man can reach God and also be saved. That is the foundation/root that we agree upon. For Christians, the way God did this was by sending Christ so that through him humans may be transformed and saved. For Muslims, it is the same except instead of Christ it is his word as expressed in the Qur’an. For Jews it is the Laws of Moses. For the Native Indians it is nature. What I am speaking about has been spoken about by many of the great saints in the Christian tradition. But Im happy that you are dedicated to your path as long as it is with sincerity and I pray that God blesses you in your journey!

      • Your last sentence proves my words have unfortunately eluded you. Listen, it is not about the JOURNEY, it is about the FOUNDATION. These words are not interchangeable. Let me say it again. It is not about the journey, it is about the foundation. We are not all promised a journey, as you suppose. I work in the hospital and some individuals have lived all the journey, they are going to live and they do not know Jesus. I have the opportunity to share with them the grace of God and believe some of them receive him, before they slip from this life into the next. I am not concerned whether or not they were living in adultery, it does not matter now. All they have is now and because we are saved by grace (not works) (not some journey) through faith in Jesus Christ, they have the opportunity to be saved.

No different than the man beside Jesus who said, remember me and Jesus said, today you shall be with me in paradise.

P.S. Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. – Qur’an 48:29

JESUS is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” – Acts 4:11-12
